Transferrin Saturation

Ranges

Reference range: 20–50 %

What it is

Transferrin saturation is the percentage of your iron-transport protein that is actually carrying iron — how "full" your iron taxis are.

Why it matters

It is a useful overall snapshot of iron availability, combining iron and TIBC into one number.

What high values can mean

A higher value can indicate iron overload and prompts further evaluation.

What low values can mean

A lower value is a common sign of iron deficiency.

How to improve it

For low saturation, iron-rich foods and, when advised, supplements help; pair with vitamin C for absorption.

Food & lifestyle

Iron-rich foods with vitamin C support iron status; the value follows your overall iron balance.

Preparing for the testFasting required

A blood test from iron studies; a morning, fasting sample may be preferred — follow your lab.

When to talk to a doctor

Discuss a high or low transferrin saturation with a doctor as part of the full iron panel.
