Ferritin

LOINC 4537-7 · mcg/L

What it is

Ferritin is the protein that stores iron in your body. The blood level reflects how much iron you have in reserve.

Why it matters

It is the best single test of iron stores, key for diagnosing iron deficiency or iron overload.

What high values can mean

A higher value can mean iron overload, but ferritin also rises with inflammation, so context matters.

What low values can mean

A lower value is a reliable sign of low iron stores, often before anemia appears.

How to improve it

For low ferritin, iron-rich foods and, when advised, iron supplements rebuild stores; pair with vitamin C for absorption.

Food & lifestyle

Red meat, beans, lentils and leafy greens supply iron; vitamin C boosts absorption, while tea/coffee with meals reduces it.

Preparing for the test

A blood test; fasting is not required — follow your lab's instructions.

When to talk to a doctor

Discuss a low or high ferritin with a doctor, who interprets it alongside other iron tests and inflammation.
