Testosterone
LOINC 2986-8 · ng/dL
What it is
Testosterone is the main male sex hormone, also present in smaller amounts in women. This test measures the total amount in your blood.
Why it matters
It is key for libido, muscle and bone, mood and, in men, fertility, and is checked for symptoms of imbalance.
What high values can mean
A higher value can relate to certain conditions or supplements and, in women, may cause acne or excess hair growth.
What low values can mean
A lower value can cause low energy, reduced libido or mood changes and becomes more common with age.
How to improve it
Healthy weight, strength training, good sleep and managing chronic conditions support healthy testosterone.
Food & lifestyle
Resistance exercise, adequate sleep and a balanced diet support hormone balance; avoid unproven "boosters".
Preparing for the test
Best drawn in the morning, when testosterone peaks; follow your lab's instructions.
When to talk to a doctor
Discuss abnormal testosterone with a doctor, interpreted with SHBG and, if needed, free testosterone.
