IGF-1

LOINC 2484-4 · ng/mL

What it is

IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor 1) is made mainly by the liver in response to growth hormone. It reflects overall growth-hormone activity.

Why it matters

Because it is steadier than growth hormone itself, IGF-1 is used to assess growth-hormone excess or deficiency.

What high values can mean

A higher value can suggest too much growth hormone and needs evaluation.

What low values can mean

A lower value can suggest growth-hormone deficiency or can occur with poor nutrition or some illnesses.

How to improve it

IGF-1 reflects the growth-hormone system; results are interpreted by a specialist rather than changed by lifestyle.

Food & lifestyle

Adequate protein and overall good nutrition support normal IGF-1; major changes are evaluated medically.

Preparing for the test

A blood test; fasting may be requested — follow your lab's instructions.

When to talk to a doctor

Discuss an abnormal IGF-1 with a doctor, who may arrange further hormone testing.
