What it is

Glucose is the sugar your body uses for energy. The blood-glucose test measures the amount circulating in your blood.

Why it matters

It is the central test for diabetes and blood-sugar control, and abnormal levels affect many aspects of health.

What high values can mean

A higher value can indicate prediabetes or diabetes, or a recent meal if the sample was not fasting.

What low values can mean

A lower value (hypoglycemia) can cause shakiness or dizziness and has several causes worth checking.

How to improve it

A diet lower in refined carbs and sugar, regular activity, weight management and good sleep support healthy glucose.

Food & lifestyle

Whole grains, vegetables, legumes and protein steady blood sugar; sugary drinks and refined carbs spike it.

Preparing for the testFasting required

For a fasting glucose, do not eat or drink anything but water for 8–12 hours beforehand — follow your lab.

When to talk to a doctor

Discuss a high fasting glucose with a doctor, who may confirm with HbA1c or repeat testing.
