What it is

Reticulocytes are young, newly made red blood cells. This test shows what fraction of your red cells are brand new.

Why it matters

It reveals how actively your bone marrow is producing red cells, which helps explain the cause of an anemia.

What high values can mean

A higher value means the marrow is making red cells quickly, as after blood loss or when an anemia is being treated.

What low values can mean

A lower value means the marrow is making fewer red cells, which can point to a production problem.

How to improve it

The reticulocyte response follows treatment of the underlying anemia rather than lifestyle changes.

Food & lifestyle

Adequate iron, B12 and folate give the marrow what it needs to produce healthy red cells.

Preparing for the test

A blood test often run with a CBC; fasting is not required.

When to talk to a doctor

Interpreted by a doctor together with your hemoglobin to understand an anemia.
