Resting Heart Rate

LOINC 40443-4 · bpm

What it is

Resting heart rate is how many times your heart beats per minute when you are calm and at rest. It is a simple window into heart health and fitness.

Why it matters

A lower resting heart rate often reflects better cardiovascular fitness, and changes can flag stress, illness or overtraining.

What high values can mean

A higher value at rest can reflect low fitness, stress, caffeine, dehydration, illness or, sometimes, a heart issue.

What low values can mean

A lower value is often a sign of good fitness, but a very low rate with symptoms can matter.

How to improve it

Regular aerobic exercise, good sleep, hydration, limiting caffeine and managing stress tend to lower resting heart rate over time.

Food & lifestyle

Consistent cardio, good sleep and limiting alcohol and caffeine support a lower, healthier resting heart rate.

Preparing for the test

Best measured first thing in the morning, before getting up and before caffeine.

When to talk to a doctor

Discuss a persistently high or very low resting heart rate with a doctor, especially with symptoms.
