What it is
MCV (mean corpuscular volume) is the average size of your red blood cells. It is one of the most useful clues to the cause of anemia.
Why it matters
Cell size helps sort anemia into small-cell, normal-cell and large-cell types, each with different causes.
What high values can mean
A higher value (larger cells) is often linked to B12 or folate deficiency, alcohol use or certain medications.
What low values can mean
A lower value (smaller cells) is typical of iron-deficiency anemia or some inherited conditions.
How to improve it
Addressing the underlying nutrient deficiency or cause is what brings MCV back toward normal.
Food & lifestyle
Adequate iron, B12 and folate from food support normal red-cell size; moderating alcohol helps when relevant.
Preparing for the test
Part of a complete blood count (CBC); fasting is not required.
When to talk to a doctor
An abnormal MCV is interpreted by a doctor with your other red-cell indices to find the cause.
