Liver
GGT
LOINC 2324-2 · U/L
What it is
GGT (gamma-glutamyl transferase) is an enzyme found in the liver and bile ducts. It is sensitive to bile-flow problems and alcohol.
Why it matters
GGT helps clarify the source of other liver results and is a sensitive marker of bile-duct and alcohol-related effects.
What high values can mean
A higher value can reflect alcohol use, bile-duct issues, fatty liver or some medications.
What low values can mean
A lower value is not a concern.
How to improve it
Reducing alcohol and addressing fatty-liver risk factors typically lower GGT over time.
Food & lifestyle
Limiting alcohol is the single most effective lifestyle step; weight management helps with fatty liver.
Preparing for the test
Often part of a liver panel; fasting is not specifically required — follow your lab.
When to talk to a doctor
Discuss a raised GGT with a doctor, who reads it alongside ALP and the rest of the liver panel.
