Blood Pressure - Systolic

Ranges

Reference range: 90–120 mmHg

What it is

Systolic blood pressure is the higher number — the pressure in your arteries when your heart beats and pushes blood out.

Why it matters

It is the number most strongly linked to cardiovascular risk, especially as we age.

What high values can mean

A higher value contributes to a diagnosis of high blood pressure, raising the long-term risk of heart attack and stroke.

What low values can mean

A lower value is usually fine, but a very low reading with symptoms like dizziness can matter.

How to improve it

Regular activity, less salt, a healthy weight, limiting alcohol, managing stress and any prescribed medication help control it.

Food & lifestyle

A vegetable- and fruit-rich diet lower in salt and alcohol (such as the DASH pattern) supports healthy blood pressure.

Preparing for the test

Sit and rest 5 minutes, feet flat, arm supported; avoid caffeine and exercise just before measuring.

When to talk to a doctor

Discuss consistently high readings with a doctor; seek urgent care for very high readings with symptoms.
