Ranges

Reference range: 0–200 /uL

What it is

Basophils are the rarest type of white blood cell. They release histamine and other chemicals involved in allergic and inflammatory responses.

Why it matters

Counting basophils helps round out the white-cell picture and can offer clues about allergies and certain rare blood conditions.

What high values can mean

A higher count can occur with allergies, chronic inflammation or, rarely, certain bone-marrow disorders.

What low values can mean

A lower count is common and usually not clinically meaningful on its own.

How to improve it

Basophils are not something you change directly; managing allergies and inflammation addresses the underlying causes.

Food & lifestyle

No specific diet changes basophils; an overall anti-inflammatory pattern supports immune balance generally.

Preparing for the test

Part of a complete blood count (CBC) with differential; fasting is not required.

When to talk to a doctor

Discuss a persistently high basophil count with a doctor, who will interpret it with the rest of your CBC.
