Arachidonic Acid/EPA Ratio

LOINC 90909-3 · ratio

What it is

This ratio compares arachidonic acid (an omega-6) to EPA (an omega-3). It summarises the balance between pro- and anti-inflammatory fatty acids in your blood.

Why it matters

It is a compact snapshot of your omega-6 to omega-3 balance, which research links to inflammatory tone and long-term heart health.

What high values can mean

A higher ratio suggests more omega-6 relative to omega-3 — a balance often described as more pro-inflammatory.

What low values can mean

A lower ratio suggests relatively more omega-3, a balance generally regarded as favourable.

How to improve it

Eating more oily fish or taking omega-3 (under guidance) typically lowers the ratio; reducing excess omega-6 oils also helps.

Food & lifestyle

Salmon, sardines, mackerel and other oily fish lower the ratio; heavy use of omega-6 vegetable oils and fried foods raises it.

Preparing for the test

Part of a fatty-acid (omega) profile; fasting is usually not required — follow your lab's instructions.

When to talk to a doctor

Best interpreted with a clinician as a trend over time rather than from a single reading.
